This must be a bit of a newb question, but I just don’t understand this. When I look at my url in the browser it shows mysitename.com, not https://www.mysitename.com. The browser can reach the site whether a user types in www or not. It just looks weird.

I noticed in wordpress General setting there is a place to change “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)”. By default they are https://mysitename.com.

Should I just change both settings to read https://www.mysitename.com?
    thanks

    Hi,

It can be configured in the control panel of your hosting, where settings about your current domains are kept.

    What hosting do you use?

    Hey, thanks. I’m using hostgator.

There are two ways to do this, 1 is to change the url in wordpress like i mentioned above in those two fields. 2 is to add a permanemt redirect in hostgator cpanel. I could add a redirect for domain.com to https://www.domain.com.

Which one is better or does it matter? I dont want to screw up anything like my google analytics or my seo plugin or anything.

    Thanks.

Or should i just leave this alone? Is there any downside to not having www in the url?

Technically there is no downside either way. You just need to decide on one method and stick with it. Being old school, I prefer the www so I have a redirect on my main website to always use the www.

You want your cpanel redirect and WordPress URLs pointing to the same thing. Both pointing to www or not.

My blog is different since it’s blog.markheadrick.com while my main site is https://www.markheadrick.com

Well, I also want to create subdomain shop.mydomain.com and have it point to a Shopify site. Not sure if this makes a difference.

No difference, just make sure the shop sub-domain points to a different folder for it’s root.
