• I may be missing something but illuminate me please.

When I create a site using WordPress, I get the full features set, including the ability to administer my site.

When I grant access to readers to sign in so they can comment, why do they get “site admin” privilege (even if limited) at all?

I’d like to see a feature to grant readers that subscribe access to comment only, no “site admin” (even the text showing up at all), no dashboard.

    Thanks!

  • Then disable user registration by going to Settings/General and uncheck “Anyone can register”.

Next, go to Settings/Discussion and configure how you want comments to be handled…making sure you don’t have a check beside “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”.

Then go to Users and delete the accounts for anyone who has already registered.

    figaro, thanks for commenting.

My question to the WP developers is “Why does a user with “subscriber” access privilege need access to the dashboard?” Can’t do anything except read WordPress related news.

There is value to registering (so the user does not need to enter name and email everytime they want to comment) but a “subscriber” level user does need a different process flow so they avoid the dashboard altogether.

Anyway, thanks for listening and for a great product!

No problem. I’m not a developer, but the value I see is that they have access to their profile from the dashboard…password change, etc. True, subscribers are very limited in what they can do in a default WP install, but that’s not necessarily true if you start expanding WP…for example, I just started using the simplepress forum plugin and I allow subscribers to post in a forum where I only allow visitors (not logged in) to view the forums.

    Maybe a developer has a different/better explanation…

figaro, I agree with you that the dashboard is needed if we expand what a subscriber can do.

What would be really intuitive (and a great experience for the user) is to allow login right on the front page (either like on the WP.org forum) or a small pop-up when the Login link is clicked. Once logged in, the user stays on the front page and the “Dashboard” (Site Admin) link then becomes active. The logged in user can now browse the site, comment, participate in the forum, post pictures, etc. If they want to go into the dashboard (to change password and other personal info), they click the Dashboard (Site Admin) link.

Now, for an Administrator, the experience should be what we have now: when an Admin logs in (using the same home page login), they get sent directly to the Dashboard so they can administer the site.

I want to just change the text so that when my members register they see “Dashboard” instead of “Site Admin” regardless of level of access. I thought maybe I need to edit the widgets.php file but I couldn’t find anything in there to change. Please advise!
