single pages don’t work

i have xampp and wordpress up and running fine (i can post/make pages and do everything in the dashboard) except when i try to go to move off the homepage to a different page (eg archives/about or a page of a post) at which point it throws the toys out of the pram and says the page doesn’t exist. any ideas? ta.
