Since 4.9: Sometimes Excerpts are empty

    Hi!

    I’ve noticed, that since new version 4.9 sometimes (not always) excerpts are missing in den search-results.

    I rolled back to previous version 4.8.3 and everything works fine again!

    My Theme: WordPress parent-theme Twenty-Sixteen without any changes in content-search.php or search.php of the child-theme.

    Relevanssi-Settings within WordPress 5.5.3–de_DE:

    Activate/checked:

    Tab “Indexing”:
    Post types
    – post
    – page
    Taxonomies
    – category
    Excerpt
    – Index the post excerpt

    Tab “Searching”
    Default operator
    – AND

    Default order
    – Date

    Keyword matching
    – partial words

    Give boost to exact matches
    Respect exclude_from_search for custom post types
    No Category restriction, no Category exclusion
    Post exclusion
    – A few pages with no relevance to the search result

    Tab “Excerpts and Highlights”:
    Create custom search result snippets
    30 Words
    CSS-style – text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold; background-color: #ffaf75;
    Highlight query terms in documents
    Uncheck this if you use non-ASCII characters

    Tab “Synonyme”:
    No Synonyme

    Tab “Stopwords”:
    Various stop words

    Can you give me some examples of searches that fail to produce excerpts? Otherwise there’s really nothing I can say about this. I haven’t noticed any missing excerpts myself, and the new code passes all the tests that test the excerpt functionality.

    If you could give me couple of examples where the excerpt is missing, what the excerpt should be and what does the post look like, that would be really helpful in figuring out what’s going on. Is there anything in common with the cases?

    Thanks for your reply!

    I will investigate this, but give me a few days, because I’m currently short of time. So my WordPress-Website is running currently with Vers. 4.8.3. without problems searching with Relevanssi and excerpts. Maybe there is also an incompatibility with other plugins. I will check this too.

    Next days I will try to setup a backup for testing. I’ll get back to you here when I’m done and have any results.

    Hi,

    I looked again for partially missing extracts in the search results. I cannot see any reason for this behavior in my active WordPress-installation. In a backup-installation Relevanssi 4.9 works fine. All excerpts appear. I don’t know why.

    Now I have deactivated “Create custom search result snippets” in “Excerpts and highlights” and I use “Advanced Excerpt”-Plugin for showing the seach-results as excerpt in my active installation. Everything works fine now with Relevanssi 4.9. All excerpts appear again.

    I can live with that. So I think: Problem solved!
