Simplifying the User Profile

Hi,

I am new to WordPress and am testing out v3.4.2

In order to test user login and profile management, I have installed Jeff Farthings “Theme My Login” plug-in v6.2.2 and “CIMY User Extra Fields” v2.3.9

To keep the profile simple I only want to display the username, password fields and some custom fields created using “CIMY User Extra Fields” – I would like only updated fields to be submitted and a message indicating success/ failure to be displayed.

Having spent several frustrating hours searching for information on what appears to be simple task, I have posted here as a last resort.

I have tried Profile Builder, S2Member, User Meta, Hide User Profile Fields, etc, etc – the plug-ins only seem to get me part of the way there.

Can anyone advise of a plug-in to do what I need – or suggest an alternative method & tools (e.g. creating a custom form)?
