SimplePie – Excessive Bandwith Usage

  • Usage statistics on my web server indicate huge numbers of page hits. Investigation has revealed that the bulk of the hits are coming from the servers own IP address. Rather than from a web browser, the ‘User Agent’ making the hits is ‘SimplePie/1.2’, which is part of the WP install.

    The server provider limits monthly bandwidth usage, so this is a problem for me.

    Question: Why is SimplePie chewing up huge amounts of bandwidth, and how can I reduce it’s bandwidth consumption?

  • Are you pulling your own RSS feed into your pages by any chance?

    Hi esmi: That is an interesting point. There is a Joomla on the same server, which is subscribing to 2 of the WP RSS feeds. That must be why the IP address is hitting itself. But still, why so many hits?

    It could be the way in which Joomla is calling the feeds. Could you not leverage a direct call to WP within Joomla using the technique outlined in this Codex page?

    Now that is extremely interesting. I will certainly look further into that angle.

    Actually, on this particular site we are using a commercial product which does just that: runs WP within Joomla. It is from corePHP, called WordPress For Joomla!.

    I’ve not seen or used that particular product. Is there nothing within its support or documentation that might help?

    I’ve searched their docs and support forum to no avail. I’ll open a ticket with their support and see what they say. If I glean any useful from them I will post it here for posterity, to help any future victims of this issue.
