Simple Product Download Link – 404 After Purchase

Hi,
I’ve searched and have found a number of possible solutions, such as re-saving permalinks and/or returning them to defaults, making sure the absolute path is correct (which it is), trying all download settings from Force to Redirect (current is Force), and yet still, after a purchase is made, the link made available on the ‘order-complete’ page and in the email generate a 404 error (but the link they show is the correct path), so does this mean directory permissions are wrong?
I edited the class-wc-download-handler.php and made ‘/’ the URL of the site (because prior it was starting at the root and it’s shared hosting so that was obvs no good, but still no joy)
