• I have looked everywhere for a non programmer’s explanation of having one post on a category page with links to next page.
I have 2 plugins, but all the instructions as usual are written for programmers only. This is normal for MT, but I was starting to think wordpress was different untill now.
    How can this be done?
    1) Example of code in laymans terms.
    2) Installation done easily by a non programmer.

Thank you inadvance, I just spent hours trying myself and am very frustrated.

  • Which two plugins?
For having different number of posts displayed on different views, I used one of these 2 plugins:
    https://mattread.com/archives/2005/03/custom-query-string-plugin/
    https://rephrase.net/miscellany/05/perpage.phps
The first one creates a nice interface in teh admin panel. No coding required.
(whether there is a link to the next post – it depends on your theme)

The second one looks like it will do the one post per page, thank you.
    It also seems understandable.
How does one add paginate. I tried scripty godess plugin but its written for programmers only and after a few hours got frustrated.
Thanks for the help really appreciated

Spoke too soon, that screwed up the styling and didnt work. Maybe another program would be better as one post page with pagination is a simple matter for most programs.

With wordpress its getting to be a nightmare.
As client is already using it, and wants ten pages per category, I’ll have to make ten separate categories 1,2,3,4 etc for each category.
One would think one post per page with paginate link to next page would be simple.

Am I missing something obvious – why not just set
    Show at most: 1 post
    in Options -> Reading?

    John

    wants ten pages per category,
Ten pages or ten posts? I am lost here…

Sorry for sounding negative, its a little frustrating.
a client wants three categories of information.
Of these he wants one post on each page.
Each category will have ten pages.
Want them paginated and linked, but not on sidebar

Even with Movable Type which has poor docs and most plugins not working can do that.
If I cannot limit a page to one article, then I have to make every page a separate category.
Then manually make hard coded links to each page (next page >)

Why is this soooo difficult when it should be as simple as making bread?

I set it to show one post.
There is one post on main page
Now I go to main site page, and it says
sorry, you are looking for something that isnt there.

So I set it back to show ten posts

Of these he wants one post on each page.
Each category will have ten pages.
Meaning he knows he will have only ten (10) posts, right?

If I cannot limit a page to one article, then I have to make every page a separate category.
    1. What jpmcc asked above: admin > Options > Reading > Show at most 1 post – why that doesn’t work for you?
    2. Are we talking pages or Pages?

    Furthermore:
I’ll have to make ten separate categories 1,2,3,4 etc for each category.
    and
If I cannot limit a page to one article, then I have to make every page a separate category.
… these are totally nonsense utterances. Either you or the client (or both) don’t understand something basic … or just not able to communicate what you want.

Is there another program that can do this?
    I’m lost here.
A webpage that shows one article, and links to another one in same category.
12 hours later I am trying to explain what that means.

    First line on this thread:
“I have looked everywhere for a non programmer’s explanation of having one post on a category page with links to next page.”

I know what one post on a page means.
    Also a category.
And a link to next page in that category.
Does anyone know how to do this?
    This is all very strange.
    I’ll pay for help.

He has a category. Say dogs.
He wants ten pages on dogs.
Page one, page two, page three etc.
Amount of content on each page limited somehow.

Its gettin confusing because I am trying to explain it in a way its understood.
One webpage, one article on that page.
    title
    body.
    scroll down.
    end.
    —>next page.

I know no other way to say it.
    this is strange
    Does nobody use paginate here?

    One more try.
I have a real estate agent.
He has a list of properties for three areas.
I made each area a category.
He has 100 listings for each area which will grow, which makes the page too long.
I spent forever trying to do this.
I can do anything with MT, EE, twiki, and any other program.
    Wordpress is totally un-understandable.
So what if I’m not a php programmer? Not everyone is, and they are still nice people.
    We want paginate.
Everything about it is written for programmers.
So its a programmers only club.
    Will pay.
