Sidebars get erased when add/remove/edit Sidebars in functions.php

Every time I add, remove, or edit the sidebar names in the Functions.php page, all of my existing sidebar widgets get cleared from my existing sidebars. I’ve added about 20 sidebars for various page templates and I’d like to be able to rename them or add/remove sidebars without experiencing this problem in the future. Please help!!
