I’ve been using Custom Sidebars on several sites for years so this is not a new user problem. The site in question is still running Twentyeleven theme. I haven’t been on it for a while but I just discovered that the 66 different custom sidebars that used to work perfectly are all gone – not just hidden but not even in the source code. I’ve looked at every way I can to bring them back. There is no option to add them in the Theme Customizer either – it only shows the WordPress widgets as options. The pages are custom templates as well. This site has been operating for my client for 5 years with all of the pages and sidebars unchanged. I realized that Twentyeleven is deprecated and have told the client that the site needs a rebuild but for now it has to work. Is this a problem with the theme? There have been no new plugins activated and the ones used are minimal.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hey @esp2013,

    Hope you’re well.

    I tried Custom Sidebars with Twenty Eleven theme without any extra plugins. And when I set some pages like this it’s working normally;

So, I don’t think the theme has problems for Custom Sidebars plugin. But maybe there is a plugin conflict that causes this. Can you try plugin conflict test? You need to deactivate all other plugins and try only with Custom Sidebars. If it solves please let me know which plugin conflicting.

If it doesn’t help maybe the problem is your custom page templates. Can you change one of the pages page templates to “Sidebar Template” and try again?

Also if you made modify the theme, maybe you should try with default codes one more time.

    Cheers,
    Oguz

Thank you for replying. I had already done the plugin testing first and then changed the page template to Sidebar Template but that doesn’t work because it reverts to one column – a couple of the different templates like Showcase will show the sidebar but in the wrong place below the page content. Using different templates also messes up my css too much to be worth it.
I can add the sidebar as a footer but am left with an empty column on the left where the sidebar should be.
I wish it just stayed as it was. Could I revert to an older version of Custom Sidebars to see if that works?

    Hello @esp2013

    I trust you’re doing well!

Using different templates also messes up my css too much to be worth it.

Please let us know does the custom sidebars showing up when you’re using a different theme?

On your site, looks like you’re using a child theme, please try to enable Twentyeleven parent theme and let us know if the sidebars will show.

If the initial issue happened after an update it is worth to try out the previous version of the plugin to see if it will bring back the sidebars.

    Please advise,

    Kind regards,
    Nastia

Hi, sorry for not finishing this thread but it was a very busy week.

I ended up having to switch to a different theme to get the sidebars working again. That meant not using any custom templates anymore. There’s probably something in those templates that is causing the problem but it just isn’t worth the time it would take to comb through everything so I’m just moving on.

    Thanks for your time!
