Sidebar widget with small square images?

New to both Hueman and WP, but love the theme. My site is Salish Sea Pilot.

I am trying to create a sidebar with small square thumbnail images and the popular/recent slider similar to the one in the theme demo.

I have seen live sites with this widget, but have been unable to find any documentation telling me how this is accomplished.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
