• Okay, before anyone gets upset, I read through all the previous sidebar posts, and none seem to be the same issue I have. Most of those posts don’t have solutions anyway.

Our site worked great for over a year (no change in theme) until yesterday. My daughter posted 2 posts, and the sidebar slipped in IE but not in Firefox. When we deleted the posts, things went back to normal. I retyped the posts from scratch, and the stupid sidebar slipped again. You can type just about anything as a new post, and the sidebar slips.

I looked at the validation page, and we have a bunch of errors, but all are old. Therefore, I’m thinking that none could be responsible for this new change.

The only difference is that I think my daughter used Firefox on her new Mac to post, but I can’t imagine that this would matter.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated, as we can’t post anything new on the site right now.

  • Without seeing the site in question and the issue, there is no way to truly help you here. I highly doubt it has to do with Mac and FF as I use Mac and FF without any issues.

    The site is https://www.karenfreberg.com/blog/

Because the problem goes away when I delete any new posts, I’m leaving one up called “Testing one two three” so that you can see the dropped sidebars.

Also, my apologies, both sidebars drop, not just the one on the right.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

they dont drop in my ie6.

Thanks for checking whooami! I thought while I was waiting for someone to help that I might as well learn something new (I have a PhD, but definitely not in computer science) and I was slogging through the validation errors.

I still have a ton, but apparently the two or three I managed to fix also fixed the problem!

I’m pretty motivated to get back to that validation list and fix more…. Thanks again!

That’s good, validation errors are so very often the cause of rendering problems. Have a look at this site, for instance:

    https://garagesales.com.au/

They have lots of errors, which they haven’t bothered to fix for almost three years. Have a look at the difference between the way IE renders it and the abomination it is in Firefox.

What’s really embarrassing is that this is supposed to be a commercial website.

This message is directed at no one in particular, but just stating my opinion. I totally agree that when experiencing problems with layout, the first thing to do is validate. Validation *shouldn’t* rule the site, but it should be very important especially when seeking help from others because when another person comes in to look at the site and sees a million validation errors, it’s like asking someone to help find a single specific item in a closet with clothes and stuff all thrown around instead of being hung in the correct place.
