Sidebar show ONLY submenu of top/main menu? Possible?

    Working on a theme for a publisher. Client would like sidebar EMPTY except to show sub-menu of horizontal menu.

    Across the top is a menu: “About Us”, “Submissions”, “News”, “Authors”, etc.

    I’d like the side menu to be blank, but when the “Authors” page is selected, (for example) the sidebar will show the “Authors” sub-pages.

    I’m trying to nest the sidebar menu or < li > in the main
    < li >, but not quite succeeding. Thoughts?
