• This is not an issue with “custom sidebars.” It’s a problem with content inside the sidebars that came with the theme.

For some of the pages in my site, I have added either text or html widgets to the Primary or Secondary sidebars. For each of them, I’ve made them only visible on those specific pages – like upcoming events in a specific topic, or an imbedded chat function on our Live Stream page.

Every few weeks for the past few months, that content just randomly disappears. I can’t say what triggers it. I thought maybe it was related to the most recent two WP updates, but today I found them disappeared again, in the absence of an update. I had to scramble to get the chat back up and running 5 minutes before our live stream started this morning. Not fun!

The widgets do not go to the inactive widgets area, they are just gone. Gone Gone Gone.
Getting tired of having to recreate them over and over.

Why is this happening, and how can I prevent it from happening in the future? Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!

  • Hi, wyndwoman, if you’re comfortable enough for doing so, I would suggest going into phpMyAdmin and from within phpMyAdmin, checking the value for the sidebar widgets: sidebars_widgets.

Here is an explanation for that: https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/a/58117/190079

Within the option value, look for something like s:15:"podcast-sidebar";a:4:, which would mean that the site recognizes that there are widgets in the sidebar, but if it shows as being something like s:15:"podcast-sidebar";a:0:{}, it means that WordPress is recognizing that there are 0 widgets associated with the sidebar.

I see that you’re using a paid theme, which makes it harder to troubleshoot, as it makes it harder to troubleshoot what is exactly is going on as the code is not freely available.
