I’m new to WordPress and have imported my entries from Typepad successfully. However, with nearly all the themes I try there is some problem with alignment, so that the sidebar appears at the bottom of the page. With the current selected template (Almost Spring) it is below the posts. With WordPress Default it is below and to the right. The only one it works OK with is WordPress Classic, which is a bit boring and I would like to find out what might be causing this. My site is https://www.david-farmer.com/blog.

    Thanks.

  • You’ll want to track this down:
    https://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.david-farmer.com%2Fblog%2F

Get it to validate and you’ll probably be ok.

The result I get is as follows:

Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because on line 191 it contained one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as utf-8 (in other words, the bytes found are not valid values in the specified Character Encoding). Please check both the content of the file and the character encoding indication.

I am really not sure where to check – I have looked in Theme Editor but know sure how to progress from there. Could it mean something as simple as the fact that I have used an ‘e’ with a French accent in one of the posts?

Doubtful… Line 191 has an empty div, doesn’t it?

I am such a newbie to WordPress that I don’t even know where or how I should find line 191. Is it in one of the files I can see in ‘Theme Editor’? Or am I missing something I shouldn’t?

    Thanks.

Thanks for your help, Yosemite. After reading the useful page and installing the Firefox toolbar, I am still none the wiser as to how to find the offending piece of code – I’ve no idea where to look. But I fixed it by deleting all the posts and re-importing them from my previous blog. Not something I would want to do every time I get a glitch, but it fixed it this time.

Only thing is, anyone know why the little (java?) buttons to resize the font etc don’t work in Jakarta template?
