Sidebar as a module.

    Greeting,

    Why couldn’t the sidebar be just like a Joomla! module. SO you can sort and edit the way you like. And not depending on the theme. Much easier. Hate editing each and every theme I use to the way I want.

    It would be nice, but it would also limit the creative possibilities for the theme designers. If all of the theme designers had to comply to one sidebar module structure, I doubt that we would have over three hundred unique themes, including themes with one two, three, or even four sidebars, and some with absolutely no sidebar. Generally a theme designer will do his/her best to make the templates (including the Sidebar template) easy to understand and edit. Once you try it a few times, it’s easy to get a hang of. There are a few plugins out there which have made an attempt to create a modular sidebar, but they are usually limited in compatibility to only a few specific themes.

    If you’re just editing the sidebar, then there shouldn’t be much PHP to learn. The sidebar should be mostly XHTML controlled by a few CSS entries in the style.css file. If you need to apply any PHP, then it should be for either hacks or plugins, which should be well documented and should offer easy-to-install instructions.
