    Hello,

I recently went into my Hostgator cpanel >> File Manager to view one of my blogs. I happen to notice there are two wp-admin directories… /wp-admin/wp-admin

The second wp-admin folder appears to be a duplicate. However, one file is missing that appears in the first wp-admin directory.

In other words, the first wp-admin has the following folders:

    /wp-admin

    1. css
    2. images
    3. includes
    4. js
    5. maint
    6. meta
    7. network
    8. user
    9. wp-admin

The second wp-admin has the following with the meta folder missing:

    /wp-admin/wp-admin

    1. css
    2. images
    3. includes
    4. js
    5. maint
    6. network
    7. user

Files that appear below the ‘user’ all seem to be duplicates of the first wp-admin directory.

None of my other blogs have two wp-admin files… just one.

Should I delete the second wp-admin or leave it alone?

    Thanks

  • I would delete the 2nd one but if it isn’t hurting anything then might as well just leave it.

I would delete it. The only reasons for the folder inside the oflder is if osmeone’s used FRP to upload it to the wrong place (very possible) or if the site’s been hacked (possible, but hopefully less likely). Deleting the second wp-admin folder will tell you that. If it stays gone, then it’s just bene human error and nothing to worry about. If it keeps on reapperaing I’d start looking a bit harder into securing your installation.

Okay… I went ahead and deleted the second wp-admin. No issues; no hacker. Looks like I copied my wp-admin by mistake back in 2011.

Thanks everyone… Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

That’s great to hear. And… you’d be amazed how often that happens. I’ve done it myself a few times, and it’s always strange to look back and think “Why did I do that???”.
