Or my site is designed previously on html using dreamweaver. Is it possible to keep my site running while I design my site on wordpress?

you can install wordpress in sub folder and work on your wordpress

else redirect your home page to your index html page it will work. i never used it but i am sure because your visitors will be redirected to your html pages and they see only old site not wordpress.

I installed the wp in the same directory. My previous index.html changed to index.html_. Now I redirected index.php to index.html but it isn’t working. Am I making some mistake?

redirect your main website like this https://www.yourwebsite.com >> https://www.yourwebsite.com/index.html let me know if it work
or you can change index.html to some other filename

what you did to solve it

I changed index.php to index1.php. Now when I need to visit wordpress site, I type site.com/index1.php. But I believe its not the correct method. That plugin isn’t working as well.

don’t change index.php file you can change file name of html file
