Showing 10 most recent posts on the index – not working!

I’m not sure what’s up with 2.0 here, but when I try to set options > reading > show at most to 10 or 20 posts it still only spits out stuff from this month, and nothing earlier. Am I missing something here? Does it automatically archive stuff older than a particular time?
