Show the post category next to time

Hello, I’m trying customize the plugin in order to show the category near the time, or near the title, my client is demanding that. I’m using the the_category() function, but I’m not having any success. I’m adding it to the $srp_content variable, like this $srp_content .= ‘<span class=”l3_levaCats”>’. the_category(‘ ‘) .'</span>’; right after the condition that shows the time. The span shows, but category doesn’t. Could you help me, or please add an option to show the category on a future update? I’m on a dead line here, thank you.
