show sub categories of current parent

how do i open the parent of the current subcategory i am viewing? by default i can only see the parent categories and have to manually click the parent dropdown in order to display all sub categories of that parent, where as i want to be able to click a sub category anywhere on my site and when the page loads the parent of the current sub category should be open?
