Show sidebar in 2011?

Hi!

I’m using 2011 theme and want to have a sidebar… now I know that this is not possible on pages if I understand correctly however When I first started with my new site I did have one on the home page. When you see thumbnails and examples of the theme there is a sidebar on these….

I think I deleted my homepage and am now using a different type of page, how can I get the sidebar back even if it’s only on my homepage?

Sorry I’m new to all of this and probably not using the correct terminology!
