Show popup on user login and logout

Hello,

I would like visitors who log into my site to be shown a simple text message popup right after the log in event. The popup can say something like: You are now logged in. Is there a way to catch the log in event and show a popup? On log in visitors are taken to the home page so that is where this popup will have to appear. It should appear only briefly (with no close button) and disappear automatically after 1 or two seconds. I do have the timed popup extension. Similarly, it will be great to have the same functionality after the log out event but this time saying something like: You are now logged out (again, after log out users are redirected to the home page so that is where this popup should appear).
