Show only the first row of gallery grid

Hi and thanks in advance for any assistance offered

I want to be able to in effect create a random 3 column x 1 row gallery using the default wordpress gallery

I want to select for instance 9 images for the gallery and a 3 column layout (which would make three rows of 3… however i only want the first row to be visible (i.e. 3 random images out of the 9 or whatever other number of images i select).
