Show most current Event on a page other than the Calendar/List

I would like to show the Event for the current date (or, the next future date is none available for current date) on a page separate from the Events Calendar page/list.

I was successful in displaying Event posts using the plugin [display-posts] shortcode. However, I am failing at figuring out a way to display only the current post.
