Show more interface options for new users

Few versions back it seemed someone decided it was a good idea to make WP simpler by hiding fields in the interface by default. This is really frustrating as I now get support requests from many clients basically saying:

“Where has the custom fields box gone?!”

Is there any way to just show all things in the editor by default rather than having to send the same tutorial email out addressing what shouldn’t be an issue?

This is making it harder not simpler.
