Hi – we decided to bin our whole blog section and have created a load of 301 redirects to send all blog post links to a new news page instead.

Everything is working fine, but was wondering if it’s possible to show a message to the viewer telling them they have been redirected as the original blog post is no longer available?

That’s not how a server redirect works and you would need to do a fake redirect using JavaScript.

Generally I would advise against doing this kind of thing as it breaks lot of things and doesn’t provide any benefit to the user.

OK – thanks for answering anyway. Although I do think visitors might appreciate some kind of message explaining they are being redirected instead of just ending up on a different page.

Now wondering if I can redirect to a semi holding page which will popup a message and is then redirected on again. But this could just be the wine talking ??

Again I would avoid doing that. It breaks useful things (Google knowing that your page has moved), and replaces them with things that get in the way of what the user wants to do (they don’t care if a page has moved).
