Show custom post type with same category

I can’t seem to get it working.

I have a custom post type called Events and post-event has certain event categories. I want to display related events based on the category of the event post. In your plugin, I have the “Fetch related posts only from:” > “Same event_categories” checked. However, it’s still not displaying correctly.

For example, on the website, there’s a Flag Day event listed out for every year. I want to display past year Flag Day events by using the category I’ve set it with on the sidebar. But other events were listed out instead.

I did try with the “Find related posts based on content as well as title:” check and unchecked. Still doesn’t come out right.

How should this be corrected?

(I would also like to add if you could add the option to display the listed post in descending or ascending order by date maybe? I mean that would be great.)
