Should unsubscribe links work within confirmation emails

I have a form setup which is linked to a confirmation email.
Within the confirmation email I use the
{{ unsubscribe }}
Merge tag.

However it does not render a link when I receive the email and click the link, the link comes out.
The question is, should it this merge tag work on this email? and if so, what should I be doing differently?
