add facebook like link

I have created my first WordPress website, and I would like to add a “like on Facebook” link, so that people visiting the website can like it on their Facebook page. I have spent many hours reading instructions and installing and trying out many plugins, but I haven’t managed to get any of the options to work. None of them have detailed instructions, and simply don’t make any sense to me. I have checked the support forums of the plugins I’ve tried out, but don’t see any point of posting a question there, as most of the existing questions have not been answered, and there is virtually no activity on them at all. Can some experienced person tell me if adding a “Like this page on Facebook” is really THAT difficult? I don’t usually have any difficulty following technical instructions, and I am no computer newbie in other quite difficult areas. If anyone can recommend a plugin that does this well, or a page that gives good, detailed instructions, I would greatly appreciate it. I am reluctant to go down the track of manually editing background code, as I believe this will have to be done every time my theme is updated.
