Should images automatically change their format after upload?

  • Hello.

    Should images automatically change their format (to webp or avif) when uploaded to the gallery, or do I need to use the thumbnail regeneration plugin every time? Now I don’t see automatic generation. The settings are set to webp and all three boxes below are checked.

    Hello @loralora, thanks for your question. When uploading your image with the Modern Image Formats plugin installed and active, you will get a WebP or AVIF image file generated for that image.

    Please note however that if the plugin has identified that the WebP/AVIF version of the uploaded image would have a larger file size than the original uploaded image, the WebP/AVIF version will not be generated. This could be what is happening.

    Please note also that AVIF images will be generated if supported on the hosting server, otherwise WebP will be used as the output format. When both formats are available, the output format can be selected under Settings > Media. Modern images will be generated only for new uploads, pre-existing images will only converted to a modern format if images are “Regenerated”.
