Hi, Brand new to WordPress, and need some advice about the best way to upgrade a very old website, (more than 10 years old). I started creating a website in 1996 called the Munich City Guide, it is very old and I thought to completely update the site.

My idea was to buy a html5 website template or a WordPress template and have a section for the City Guide, a Blog, and sub domains for other sites like https://www.worldclips.com

Would I be making the right choice of going with WordPress?, and anything I should consider.

Appreciate anybody taking the time to reply.

    Regards

Yes, of course. (This is a WordPress support forum after all.) ??

In my humble opinion: wait. That’s good advice for any purchases by the way.

There are many freely available themes here and some of them are amazing.

Rather than making a purchase (yet) create a WordPress installation and choose a theme from here. Or use the Twenty Eleven theme.

If you want to customize that theme, them make a child theme of it and start customizing away. You can leverage your past experience that way.

You’ll get your feet wet in WordPress and will have a better understanding when/if you decide to make that purchase.

Note: I use a purchased theme myself. When I have questions about it I don’t post them here, I post them on my vendors support forum (which is part of the purchase). Here we are not equipped to support commercial themes.

I have a main website and 4 other sub domains, which are seperate url’s. Can I install WordPress without affecting the existing sites? I guess I can have a Blog setup for each site in the 1 WordPress?

Thanks for your very useful comments.

Yes, you can install WP without impacting your other sites.

If you want to have a site for each of them, you could use Multisite, but it is a little more complicated.

Thanks for the post. What is “Multisite”?

Normally with WordPress, the software runs one single site. If you want to run additional sites on the same server the you install multiple copies of the software in different directories.

But with multisite, you install one copy of the software but configure it so that there are multiple web sites. One copy but multiple sites.

It’s a little advance so I suggest that you start with a regular WordPress installation first. It may save you some effort for now. ??

This topic is resolved, so don’t expect a lot of help.

Answer: Buy the theme, upload it to your server, activate it, configure it, have a beer.
