• Should I upgrade from Twenty Twenty theme?

Newer default themes like Twenty Twenty Four and Twenty Twenty Five have descriptions stating that they are designed to take advantage of the latest standards and WordPress features. What does this imply for older themes?

Are the updates to older themes such as Twenty Twenty just security patches, or are they actually bringing the older themes in line with the newer themes in terms of functionality and latest WordPress features?

A simple test: If I have two sites, one with Twenty Twenty, and the other with Twenty Twenty Five, all other things being equal (design, content, hosting, latest WordPress version, latest PHP version etc.) would there be any functional difference between the two sites?

  • Hi @tintomatoes:

Newer themes are built to take full advantage of WordPress’s latest features, particularly the Site Editor:

    • You can customize everything visually, including headers, footers, and templates, without modifying theme files or using custom CSS.
    • They offer better performance with modern coding practices.
    • They are optimized for flexibility, making it easier to change layouts, fonts, and colors without needing a child theme.

What about older themes like Twenty Twenty?

    • Older themes like Twenty Twenty still receive security updates and bug fixes, but they are not being updated to support Full Site Editing.
    • They remain reliable and stable, especially if you prefer a classic theme with the Customizer.
    • However, they don’t get all the latest design and block flexibility improvements.

Functional Differences: Twenty Twenty vs. Twenty Twenty-Five

If you compare two sites—one using Twenty Twenty and another using Twenty Twenty-Five—both updated to the latest WordPress version:

    • Content and basic functionality will work the same (posts, pages, core features).
    • Customization will be very different:
      • Twenty Twenty relies on the Customizer and widgets for site adjustments.
      • Twenty Twenty-Five removes the Customizer in favor of Full Site Editing, giving you more visual control.
    • Performance may be slightly better on newer themes, as they are optimized with newer standards.

    Should you upgrade?

    • If you want easier customization and a future-proof setup, switching to a newer theme makes sense.
    • If you’re happy with your current design and don’t need Full Site Editing, staying with Twenty Twenty is fine.
