• Hi,

    Brand new here, hi ??

I am planning a smaller community site for mainly women who all share the same interest in beading (jewellry)
The site should be filled with articles, a blog, tutorials (videos) gallerys and of course a forum. Members should be able to connect and send messages, and it would be great to be able to connect with other sociable sites as well.
I am totally new to WP, have used Joomla on a few occasions, mostly because I wanted to see if I could install it…

My question then, why should I use WP instead of Joomla, someone told med it was better for me to use WP and now I would like to know from you guys if you have the time. Or is Joomla better for my purpose?

Another question while I am at it, can registered users of “my site” if I install Buddypress, have their own blogs on my site?

Thank you for your time, it’s much appreciated!
    Stina

  • As for using WordPress or Joomla, go WordPress. My website is currently with Joomla and I’m in the process of switching everything over to WordPress. WordPress is a lot more secure than Joomla (Joomla is extremely vulnerable to attacks). WordPress is very customizable compared to Joomla and has a larger community that is willing to help answer your questions.

I’m not sure if you can have smaller blogs within your own as I’m still new to WP.

Buddypress is a forum (I think it is what is used here) – lets your group exchange ideas – you can also have multiple blogs with WP 3.0 and the proper set-up. But a Forum strikes me as a better and easier way to have visitors share their thoughts and projects.

If you do decide on a Forum – do a new thread asking for advice on which ones are “best.”

WordPress is easy to add content to and the content can be sorted in many ways, even after the fact using Categories and Tags.

EDIT: I stand corrected – this is a customized version of bbpress, but Buddy Press was also mentioned positively in another thread.

bbPress is a forum and is running here. You can find out more at: https://bbpress.org/

BuddPress is “Social networking in a box”- Basically a free FaceBook application. You can find out more at: https://buddypress.org/

I agree, WordPress is the way to go.

Just to clarify, if you install BuddyPress along with WP, you’ll have social networking features such as blogs, groups, and as you asked, forums.
