Should i be worried about all of these lockouts that are not me?

  • I am quite new to WordPress and my site has only been shown to a select few people.

    Recently i have been receiving lockout notifications that are NOT from me.

    I don’t think i can attach a photo here so i will copy and paste… This is under Settings > Limit Login Attempts at the bottom where it shows lockouts.

    90.206.28.111 6lextn (1 lockout)
    51.255.155.83 admin (8 lockouts)
    91.210.144.182 admin (3 lockouts)
    91.210.144.153 admin (2 lockouts), invincibet (1 lockout)
    91.210.147.65 invincibet (2 lockouts)
    91.210.145.218 invincibet (1 lockout)

    This seems like waay too many lockouts from different IP addresses trying different usernames? Surely there is something really wrong with that?

    Should i be worried? The password is impossible to guess but i don’t know if someone else could find a way around that?

    Also is there a way to stop people trying to gain access to my website?

    Any help or assurance would be great!

    EDIT – I also have to log back in every once in a while. Is this because i haven’t logged in for a few days or is that because i have been logged out because someone has successfully logged in elsewhere?

  • That nubmer of lockouts is just slightly more then none at all. It’s tiny compared to some that I’ve seen. I’ve seen ~700 in an hour once, and a lot of sites that I’ve seen would get between 20 and 50 a day on slower periods.

    What that’s coming from is botnets that have a list of sites to try, so they try each one and move on. As they are distributed all over the world, you get 100’s or 1,000’s of different IP addresses. The majority will attempt once or twice, but a few will try more. Most times if they can’t get in within about 8 or 10 attempts they’ll leave and move onto another target.

    The only time you would want to worry is when someone that’s not you signs into your account. Apart from that it’s all fine.
