• Question: I am currently running a standalone install of WordPress with a very popular blog — last I checked 3000 posts, 360,000 comments. I would like to add a forum for my readers, but want to protect my current databases and keep them separate. I would like to share users. Bbpress is only being supported as a WP plugin right now.

I’ve been researching multisite all morning and it sounds like it’ll do a lot of what I want but in the Codex itself it says:
    – “It’s not the best if you want to share users.” –
    – And I’ve just found this thread where @ipstenu tells someone else:
“I think the problem is you’re misunderstanding what MultiSite is for. MultiSite is not for making a series of interconnected sites. Yes, it can be tweaked to do so, but out of the box, it’s for managing multiple unrelated sites, like WordPress.com :)” –

So if not multisite, what then? Thank you in advance.

If you want separate Database you’ll want to have a second WP install and connect the users.

You certainly could make a second site just for the forums, but what’s wrong with installing the plugin for your current site and going to town? You mention ‘protection’ but really with Multisite and a plugin it’s the same database and site, so you’re not protecting very much.

Thank you for the reply, @ipstenu. Maybe I misspoke — my ultimate goal is to keep the blog and forum separate so if one goes down, the other is unaffected — or if one is affected by malware, the other is unaffected. Would multisite accomplish that?

(And, I should note, I wouldn’t mind having the option to have multiple, separate bbpress forums, or at least one other installation of WP running.

    Nope.
