• Excellent plugin that works visually in the Customiser and allows me to style the login with minimum fuss!

You’ll see from the thread below that a recent update caused an issue for me and that the plugin author responded very quickly and very positively. So, I have rewritten this review and given it the full 5 stars. Thanks Rich.

I had intended to leave a 5 star review with comments such as “finally a plugin that works visually” and “allows me to style the login with minimum fuss”.

However, today the plugin was updated and now puts a “powered by” badge on the login screen. Yes, that can be turned off but it’s arrogant of the developer to add that badge to an install that’s already set up.

I have no objection to the badge being opt-out for a new install, but when the plugin is already in place and the login screen already customised, to add that badge without permission is not acceptable. When the behaviour is changed to opt-in for existing installs, then I will revisit this and change the review to 5 stars.

  • I’m sorry you feel that way Peter. You’re very welcome to your own opinion and thoughts. I do have a few initial concerns though:

The badge is not initially activated for existing installs. You have to go into the Customizer for the option to be recorded, saved and then output (if it remains on). If anything but that happened, I’d gladly investigate and help figure out what happened.

On the other hand, maybe you’re right about the option not being default at all. Though opening a productive dialogue doesn’t typically start with calling the other party arrogant. We’re human behind each of our screens and we deserve to give each other due respect. ????

This sort of feedback is better suited as a support ticket/request – to explore the decision, the effects of that decision, your thoughts, my thoughts, any bugs, and a possible solution. That’s much more productive and open than a hostage rating.

Anyhow, you’ve made your case – and after some consideration – I think you may be right. Even though 9.5/10 of plugins/apps display opt-out “Powered by” badges, maybe this is a bit more personal. Or, maybe the fact that it wasn’t included since day one is making feel this way?

Either way, I don’t want to have put all this effort into building a really neat login customizer that actually does its job well – just to have a painful 2 star review tossed at it for something that doesn’t even affect the actual premise of the plugin.

I’ll have a minor update pushed shortly with the default value set to off.

    Thanks for your feedback Peter.

The point is that I now have to go through all of the sites that this plugin is used on and edit the settings – settings which I had considered set and shouldn’t have to be made to revisit. Like I said, I have no problem with opt-out for new installs, but existing ones should be opt-in. Thanks for listening ??

    Hi @petervandoorn,

You actually don’t have to. The option does not set (and will not display) if you’ve just updated to the latest version of the plugin. I wouldn’t force a badge to display on every site that has deployed Login Designer.

Your choice is only saved when you open the Customizer and hit “Publish”.

I just ran a number of tests and confirmed that the option is not initially set without a saved Customizer instance.

I’m not sure if I’m following you 100% now.

Were you possibly mistaken about the badge being auto-set and reacted as such?

I updated the plugin in one site from the previous version (1.0.8 to 1.1.0) and the badge displayed. I had to go in to the customiser to unset the badge.

Hi Peter, I’m simply not seeing that same behavior (also updated on my own sites, though I kept the badge on).

Did you perhaps go the Customizer at any time in between the update and when you saw the badge?

Well that is indeed odd as I’ve tried another site and it doesn’t display the badge. Must be “one of those things” that seem to happen quite often with WordPress!! Thanks for your conscientious attention to this. I will now happily update this review.

I appreciate it Peter! Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out!

    Have a great day!
