I just upgraded to 4.2 and the first thing I notice when I have scheduled a new post is that the button (beside Edit and View Post) for Get Shortlink is missing. Can’t find anywhere else for the shortlink. It also used to appear in the JetPack Publicize box for each post, so I wouldn’t have to edit that. Now that only shows the title.

I used to use the Jetpack shortlink settings, but I found that wp.me was frequently slow or down and resulted in 404 postings on Facebook (using Publicize). So I turned it off and have been using the native WordPress shortlinks (not as pretty, but at least they work all the time).

I did not change my permalink settings. I updated WordPress from 4.1.3 to 4.2, I updated Jetpack and I updated TwentyEleven theme (which I am using a child of).

Did they get rid of shortlinks in 4.2? Or are they somewhere else? (I checked Screen Options.) Or did one of those updates mess it up?

Nope, still doesn’t work. I’m guessing something is amiss with core files or a plugin or something, but it’s not important enough to me to waste time searching for the reason. I’m just using the not-so-shortlink provided in the Preview address bar.

The ability to grab shortlink for scheduled posts is extremely important for my use as an art blogger. I need to schedule my posts ahead with Hootsuite and need the post shortlinks feature which has disappeared upon updating wordpress. Please bring back this important feature.

why is this post marked as resolved when it is not?

I’ve just discovered that the button labelled ‘shortlink’ on the edit page, which used to provide a short code, doesn’t work any longer – it still looks the same but no response when clicked.

I work around this by copy/paste the PREVIEW url into Hootsuite so I can schedule my post announcements. This works very well although I too would like to see shortlinks back.

Hello, I’m a virtual assistant and support several clients with WP websites. I’ve not been seeing the shortlink option for awhile. As PaulaArtist suggested, I tried using the Preview URL but get an error message “You do not have permission to preview drafts.” I agree, this topic is not resolved. Has anyone received an answer to this question? Thanks.

Further to Paula’s tip, when copying the preview URL, you gotta edit it.

Preview URL looks like this: https://www.yoursite.com/?p=1824&preview=true
    Copy only this part: https://www.yoursite.com/?p=1824

Still only a workaround, no solution yet available, apparently….

My short link feature has also disappeared with the 4.2.1 update and I have exactly the same issues as Jane W. All the above work arounds do not work, and I have never used Jetpack. Very annoying. Is anyone at WP working on fixing this?

Same problem ,when I did the update

I have the same issue — updated WP this weekend and all of a sudden the GET SHORTLINK button is now missing. I don’t use the Jetpack version, WP always had a better shortlink option on each post so why would I bother. I’m dying to know what’s happened here, and how we can get our button back!!

UPDATE: I installed the SHORTER LINK plugin to re-establish the button — seems to work now!

I have the same issue SHORTLINK button is missing.
For my blogs SHORTLINK button is very important.
Please bring back this important feature.
