Shortcodes: Moving Site From WP.com to self hosted

  • Greetings,

    I’m currently on WP.com and am considering moving to self hosted. I’m doing a test transfer now and see that the shortcodes I’ve used on WP.com will not work in a self hosted setting. Is there a plug-in I can install in my self hosted WP that will replicate the features offered by WP.com shortcodes? Thanks!

    If you’re up for more, what other WP.com features should I be expecting to have to replace in a self hosted environment?

    Try installing Jetpack. It includes most, if not all, of the shortcodes that are a part of the WordPress.com setup.

    So I investigated Jetpack in more detail and decided that, for now at least, I don’t want to install it. For one thing, it seems WP.com is intent on hosting everyone’s images. That’s one of the things I’m trying to get away from by self hosting.

    It seems I need a more basic education on shortcodes. Are they built in to WordPress? Do I need to install a plugin? I’ve searched this site, but that brings up a zillion posts with specific detailed questions, and I need a general introduction to shortcodes at this point. What’s the general procedure for taking control of one’s shortcodes in a self hosted environment? Links to relevant articles most appreciated.

    If you want to write your own, read about the shortcode api.

    WP core has a few shortcodes. Otherwise, they’re provided by plugins and themes. As noted, the wp.com supplied shortcodes are available to self-hosted sites via Jetpack. (You do not have to enable the image CDN.)

    Thanks much Steve, that’s the start I need.

    I didn’t know I could turn off image CDN in jetpack, so perhaps I’ll give that another look. I did try to install it a few days ago and the installer threw up an error I didn’t understand. Something about file size limitations php.ini I think.
