Shortcode for limited number of events?

We are using this plugin for a client’s website. They want to feature a calendar section (not a sidebar widget) on their homepage that lists the next 3 or 4 upcoming events only. Once an event passes, it should go away and the next one in line should take its place.

Is this possible? Does this make sense?
