I can’t seem to figure out how to get shipping costs taxed. I have nexus in Illinois and they require shipping costs to be taxed. I have automatic tax rates enabled, but it appears that each tax rate is automatically not taxing shipping costs. I’ve spend hour trying different things to fix this but can’t figure it out.

  • Hi @lvanderlaan,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I understand how important it is to ensure that your store complies with local tax regulations. Firstly, could you please confirm if you have set the tax status for your shipping rates to ‘Taxable’ in the WooCommerce settings? This is a crucial step as it allows the system to apply taxes to shipping costs. You can find this setting by navigating to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping and editing your shipping zones. Within each shipping method, there should be an option to set the tax status.

Additionally, in the tax settings, there’s a checkbox for ‘Shipping’ which needs to be checked to ensure that shipping costs are taxed. This can be found under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. Make sure that this box is checked for all relevant tax rates.

Since you mentioned that you have a nexus in Illinois, it’s also essential to ensure that your tax rates for Illinois are correctly entered. For automated tax calculations, the system should handle this, but it’s always good to double-check. You can review the tax rates under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax.

If you’ve already checked these settings and the issue persists, could you provide me with the following additional information?

    • A screenshot of your tax settings, particularly the tax rates for Illinois.
    • Details on whether you’re using any third-party shipping plugins or services that might affect tax calculations.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

I use WooCommerce Weight Based Shipping and I have the “yes” selected for if shipping is taxable. However, it doesn’t seem to be applying. I’m also having the issue of when I try to edit a weight-based shipping setting, it won’t let me save it and keeps circling like it’s trying to save. I have Illinois as my nexus state and have them as automatic tax calculations. However, when a tax rate shows up automatically, the shipping tab is automatically deselected.

Since I have automatic tax rates enabled (which I need), it overrides any taxable status for shipping I have on plugins. I tried many different plugins, including woocommerce weight based shipping, and the “shipping” box is always unselected when a new tax rate shows up in the standard tax rates tab. There seems to be no way for me to override this to apply tax on shipping.

    Hi @lvanderlaan,

Since you’re using a third-party plugin (meaning it’s not developed by us) our support scope here is limited, and it’d be best to reach out to WooCommerce Weight Based Shipping‘s support for more details.

Additionally, you can consider other options like Table Rate Shipping, which is developed and maintained and thus supported by us!

I hope this helps so far!

Okay so I tried using Table Rate Shipping, but I’m running into the same problem where my shipping costs are not being taxed. The fact that I’m enabling automated tax calculations seems to always override there being no shipping tax.

I attached a screenshot of what I’m seeing. The box way on the right for shipping is always deselected for new shipping rates in Illinois, where I have nexus. Even when I try to select the shipping box, it deselects automatically when a new order is placed in that tax rate area.

    Hey, @lvanderlaan!

As I understand you purchased Table Rate Shipping, but is having the same issue, correct?

Since you purchased a paid extension, to ensure that we can assist you further, could you please create a new ticket on our support page and include the forum thread link? This will allow our team to review your specific issue and provide you with the best possible solution. You can do this by going to WooCommerce.com > MY profile > Support

    Have a wonderful day!
