The thing i am wondering about is when do i “need” to start sharding the database?

That depends completely on your server resources, configuration, your traffic, etc. As far as this goes every install is a special case.

And how many DBs should i switch to?

Base this decision on how big you expect the install to be in 1-2 years time.

    Is this plugin compatible with

The repository has over 25,000 plugins. No one maintains a complete plugin compatibility list.

I have a Intel? Core? i7-4770 Quad-Core Haswell with 12gb RAM. that i ONLY use for a WPMU site.

As per now i only use 3gb on the SQL process.

the last 3 years it has grown to this… and i think it will most likely add 4000 tables a year. I think that 16 should be enough. Is there a possibility to “move” to 256? or du i have to start over then?

    16 will probably cover you.

There isn’t a script included for migrating from one size to another but in the past I’ve migrated from every size to every size so I can say it’s quite doable.

Thank you. How many tables would you recommend having in a database before moving up in size? I know it is a difficult questin. But a guess would be good.

That completely depends on hardware, server configuration, installed plugins, front end load, etc.

The largest install that I heard of that was running in a single DB was about 75,000 sites (probably about 700K tables).
