• Hello everybody,

since a few days my Sharing/Publicize is not working anymore. I have active connections to LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. All are connected within the Settings -> Sharing page.
However, my last post was not publiziced on any of there connections. When I am inside a new (unpublished) post and want to edit something in the “Edit Details” section from Publizice, nothing is stored. After a “Save Draft” and reloading the page, the default values are present again.
    Do you have any idea?

PS: I changed my site to https a few weeks ago. I am not sure whether this can cause problems?
PPS: I installed another plugin a few weeks ago, too: “Facebook Open Graph, Google+ and Twitter Card Tags”. This adds open graph meta tags and twitter cards. I know that Jetpack disables its own implementation of open graph meta tags when it detects another plugin that uses them. Maybe this is related to my current issue with Publizice?

I changed my site to https a few weeks ago. I am not sure whether this can cause problems?

It could, yes, if your site wasn’t properly connected to WordPress.com anymore. Could you try the following:

    1) Go the Jetpack menu in your dashboard
    2) Click on “Disconnect Site from WordPress.com” at the bottom of the page if your site is currently connected to WordPress.com.
    3) Confirm the disconnection.
    4) Click on the Connect button to connect your site to WordPress.com again.

Once you’ve done so, go to this page and make sure your Publicize connections are listed as working there:
    https://wordpress.com/sharing

If none of this helps, could you post your site URL here so I can have a look?

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:
    https://jetpack.com/contact-support/

    Thanks!

I installed another plugin a few weeks ago, too: “Facebook Open Graph, Google+ and Twitter Card Tags”. This adds open graph meta tags and twitter cards. I know that Jetpack disables its own implementation of open graph meta tags when it detects another plugin that uses them. Maybe this is related to my current issue with Publizice?

This could potentially break Publicize to Facebook if your site were to output 2 sets of meta tags, but as you mentioned Jetpack accounts for those plugins and disables its own tags when you use another plugin. And since all your Publicize connections fail, including Twitter and LinkedIn, the problem is most likely not related to that change.

    Hi Jeremy,

thanks for your fast reply. I did your proposed steps. WordPress.com is now connected again and it shows my working connection within the https://wordpress.com/sharing URL.
However, inside the posts it is still not working. The “Edit Details” section is still not storing my changes.

You can access my blog here: https://blog.webernetz.net

    Thanks a lot!

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

Thanks for giving that a try!

Could you try deactivating each one of your plugins, one at a time, and let me know if you find a conflicting plugin?

    Thread Starter Johannes Weber

    (@johannes4711)

Uh, yes, I will try to do that.

One more remark: I just published a blog post. All connections from publicize (in my case: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) were used to publish the blog post, but with the default text (though I tried to insert some custom text just before I hit “publish”).
Furthermore, on all three plattform the image that was used was NOT the featured image, though the og:image and twitter:image pointed to the correct one. Is that correct? Is Publicize using other images than the open graph tags?

Excellent! Was this after deactivating a specific plugin?

with the default text (though I tried to insert some custom text just before I hit “publish”).

That’s definitely an issue. There was no custom message saved in our logs for that post. Did you create the message and then hit Publish right away, or did you save your draft first? Hitting Publish right away should work as well, but something appears to be getting in the way on your site.

on all three plattform the image that was used was NOT the featured image,

I can’t say for LinkedIn and Twitter because I don’t have access to the form, and it appears you’ve deleted the Publicize tweet for the latter, but Facebook appears to use the correct Featured Image on my end:

    https://i.wpne.ws/i2ft

Did you expect a different image to be used?

Is Publicize using other images than the open graph tags?

In some cases, like when using Publicize for Twitter accounts and Facebook Profiles, we are able to send an image alongside the post, so it can be embedded in the Facebook Post / Tweet directly. In those cases, we send the Featured Image if it is large enough.

For Facebook Pages and LinkedIn Pages, on the other hand, we cannot send any image. We consequently only send a message and a link, and Facebook / LinkedIn then crawl the post, look for Open Graph Meta Tags, and build the post preview themselves based on that information.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

    Hi Jeremy,

at first: Thanks again for your great help!

Excellent! Was this after deactivating a specific plugin?

No, it just worked with all of my plugins activated.

Did you create the message and then hit Publish right away, or did you save your draft first?

Yes, created the message and then hit Publish right away.

I can’t say for LinkedIn and Twitter because I don’t have access to the form, and it appears you’ve deleted the Publicize tweet for the latter, but Facebook appears to use the correct Featured Image on my end:

Oh yes, sorry, you are correct: Facebook loaded the correct image. Sorry for that. BUT both other sites (LinkedIn and Twitter) did not load the correct one. LinkedIn still shows it:
    https://fs5.directupload.net/images/161109/wbjw8pvm.png

Did you expect a different image to be used?

Yes, LinkedIn and Twitter should have shown the featured imgage (the colorful keys).

In some cases, like when using Publicize for Twitter accounts …

Ok, is there an option to NOT send the featured image to Twitter so that it uses the twitter:image meta tags?

    Thread Starter Johannes Weber

    (@johannes4711)

Could you try deactivating each one of your plugins, one at a time, and let me know if you find a conflicting plugin?

Yes, here we go: It is the following plugin that prevents the saving of the “Edit Details” section: “Search by Algolia – Instant & Relevant results”. I tried this plugin for their instant search feature on the site. But I can attest that this plugin causes the error within the blog editing. For now I disabled it.

is there an option to NOT send the featured image to Twitter so that it uses the twitter:image meta tags?

That’s not an option right now, but we’re considering adding an option. You can follow our progress here:
    https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/565

That wouldn’t help much here, though, since it seems the problem is that the Featured Image wasn’t recognized at all.

Could you send me a link to the image URL that was used instead of the Featured Image on LinkedIn and Twitter? Is that one of the gallery images I can see towards the bottom of your post?

Could you also let me know how you created the Featured Image? Did you use the Featured Image option appearing below the Publish button and the category / tag selection in the post editor? Did you add that Featured Image before to hit Publish?
What happens when you add a Featured Image, save a draft, and then hit Publish? Does it help?

It is the following plugin that prevents the saving of the “Edit Details” section: “Search by Algolia – Instant & Relevant results”.

I’m glad you could figure this out! It might be useful to let the plugin author know so they can check what the conflict is exactly; the plugin might be creating a JavaScript error that breaks other elements relying in JavaScript, for example.

Could you send me a link to the image URL that was used instead of the Featured Image on LinkedIn and Twitter? Is that one of the gallery images I can see towards the bottom of your post?

Yes, it was the first image of the four images at the bottom of my post. This is the URL of the image that was used on LinkedIn and Twitter:
    https://blog.webernetz.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/weberdns.de-2016-09-01-10_51_53-UTC-before-new-ZSK.png

What happens when you add a Featured Image, save a draft, and then hit Publish? Does it help?

Yes, I am always using the “Featured Image” section within the GUI. And yes, I added the featured image weeks ago and it always appeared correctly after saving the draft, etc.

    It might be useful to let the plugin author know so they can check what the conflict is exactly;

    Done.

That’s interesting. Is this the first time this happens, or do you experience the same issue with all posts?
Did you update Jetpack between the time you first uploaded that Featured Image and the time the post was published?
Could you try to create a brand new post today, and let me know if you experience the same issue?

    Thanks!

I am not fully sure since I changed a few plugins (open graph, etc.) during the last weeks. I’ll keep on investigating in the future weeks.

Did you update Jetpack between the time you first uploaded that Featured Image and the time the post was published?

Uh, difficult question. I do not know anymore.

Could you try to create a brand new post today, and let me know if you experience the same issue?

Yes, I am currently publishing once a week on Tuesday. So tomorrow comes the next post. I will update you on any issues here.

    Hi Jeremy,

I just published a new post (it was scheduled, to be exact). It was correctly puliziced on LinkedIn and Facebook but it did NOT appear on Twitter at all. I tweeted it manually.

    This is the blog post:
    https://blog.webernetz.net/2016/11/15/dnssec-with-nsec3/

    This is my Twitter account:

At least there was no trouble with the images. BUT: This time I had no gallery within the post, nor a picture with a link. I suppose that this might be related to the problems I had in the past.

I checked our logs, and it seems that your twitter connection was marked as skipped for this post.

Could you give it another try, and make sure all checkboxes are checked before you publish?

Yes, when publicizing my next post next week I well take special care about the checkboxes. (Though I am pretty sure that it was checked.)

    Hi Jeremy,

I blogged again today. These are the results: All three connections worked with Publicize (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook). However, different images were chosen:
    – Facebook shows the correct one (the yellow leaves): https://www.facebook.com/webernetz
    – Twitter does NOT show the correct featured image but an image that was placed in the post later: https://twitter.com/webernetz/status/800997198616006656
    – Same for LinkedIn that also showed the “walking man” rather than the featured image.

    Do you have an idea?
