Sharing on Facebook doesn’t work

I wrote an article about validating the metadata for search engines and various social websites.

What happened was that Facebook couldn’t parse the URL when it was first shared, for any reason. My guess is there was a temporary error encountered at the varnish server.
The gist is that Facebook caches everything, even if it’s invalid.

In any case, I “Scraped Again”, and it should work now. I verified this by pasting the link to preview the snippet on Facebook.

I’ve first shared the new page in Google+ without any problem. After that I still get a 404 Page not found in Facebook.

This is an issue with the server. It outputs a 404 error when it should not, and then Facebook treats your page as a 404 page.

This might be because of a faulty Varnish configuration (check the logs!), this might be WP Super Cache or even a combination of the two. Some have stated it’s the comments plugin from Facebook to blame.

In any case, before that’s resolved, you can always use the Object Debugger on Facebook to “Fetch new scrape information”, and then the page is correctly sharable.
