While I have now marked this topic resolved, I will be extremely careful in the future in my use of plugins…as should we all.

Well, it isn’t really resolved. The cause has been discovered, but it hasn’t been fixed. The problem goes away when I remove all use of the italics command (<i>) from my widgets and comments. So it seems I cannot use them anymore.
