I have a friend whose website is using a contact form 7 to send emails. The website is hosted by a hosting company, but his company is hosting his own email. To do this, where his domain name is hosted the “A” record points to the IP address for his website. The “MX” (mail exchange) record is pointed to his server.

The contact form used to work, but no longer does. We were told by the hosting company that we may need to use WP Mail SMTP plugin to fix the problem.

    My questions are
    1. how to setup the “From” email – does this need to be an email from his company’s server?
    2. Do I need to select the “Force From Name”
    3. Would I choose the “Other SMTP” option under these circumstances?
    4. Do I select the “Set the return-path to match the From Email” option

    If yes for #3 above,
How do I set the “SMTP host” option, Encryption, SMTP Port, Auto TLS and Authentication options

Thank you for any help you can provide.

  • Hi @jjhinton,

    Please find the answers below:

    1. how to setup the “From” email – does this need to be an email from his company’s server?
‘From Email’ does not necessarily be an email from the company’s server. It depends on the mailer you’re using. Google and some of the Other SMTP does not allow to override the ‘From Email’ though. It requires the ‘From Email’ to be the one with the SMTP account. However, note that the ‘From Email’ while sending the emails must be set to the same email address as the email used to set up the SMTP plugin.

    2. Do I need to select the “Force From Name”
‘Force From Name’ is also not a compulsion. It also depends on the mailer you’re using. If checked, the ‘From Name’ will be used for all emails, ignoring values set by other plugins.

    3. Would I choose the “Other SMTP” option under these circumstances?
You may choose “Other SMTP” option but you can also choose any of the other mailers such as Gmail, Mailgun, Sendgrid.

    4. Do I select the “Set the return-path to match the From Email” option
If selected, the non-delivery receipts or bounce emails are sent to the sender’s address (from email) when an email doesn’t make it to its intended destination.

How do I set the “SMTP host” option, Encryption, SMTP Port, Auto TLS and Authentication options
The SMTP settings depends on your email provider. You will need to contact your email provider to get these values. In case it helps, here are the SMTP settings for some popular providers.

I hope this helps! Could you please let me know if I need to clearify any of the above information?

    Thanks!

Hi @jjhinton – We haven’t heard from you in about a week, so I’m going to go ahead and mark this ticket resolved. If you still have questions, though, please feel welcome to continue the conversation.
