• So, I have a blog on tumblr and I want to set up a more comprehensive layout and am moving over to wordpress. I am wondering if there is a way that I can use the domain name from my other blog to set up wordpress, but still have that blog live until my wordpress is ready to go.
issues would include: my hosting would need to point towards both tumblr and wordpress or could i set it up with https://example.com/index or something like that?

Any comments to get me on the right track.

No, a domain can only point to one location at a time. You CAN build your site on a temp URL (which most ISPs will give you, check with them), and then change the URL when you get the site done.

Ipstenu is correct. You could your hosts file to point at the new host whilst developing, before switching DNS over.

Here is a (badly named) post: https://wpgarage.com/tips/install-wordpress-without-domain-name/

However, Ipstenu’s suggestion is better. You should never hard code the domain in your themes or plugins, and renaming the site is reasonably simple in WP these days.
