• Hi group,
I have heard wordpress is the best system these days to create and service websites for a business. Im New to wordpress but fairly experienced with web sites and seo etc.. so i don’t think it will take me long to get up to speed with wordpress if it is any good.

I believe i need to set up a new domain at a few pounds a month cost then from the cpanel i install wordpress and then it all runs on line etc..
    Can i ask:

    – im in the uk, what’s the best uk host for wordpress? Or can i use any that support wordpress in the Cpanel? I have used “U.K. web solutions direct” before and they seem good but i Want to make sure i Have the best for WordPress if it makes a difference.

    – is it possible to play online with a trial web site that doesn’t have a domain that only i have access to just to make sure it is what i want before i pay for a domain?

    – if i purchase a domain can a website be designed and built but not be seen by google online before i decide it to go live? My websites to date have been done on a pc and fully tested before uploading the site, i don’t weant any issues with google etc.. from poor links and badly built sites etc..

I look forward to your input

    Glooper

Discussion of that will get this thread shut down, so let’s avoid that one.

Sure, but why not build locally for playing? There are lots of guides (https://www.google.com/search?q=wordpress+localhost) for setting up WP on your PC for dev/testing/playing

if i purchase a domain can a website be designed and built but not be seen by google online before i decide it to go live?

It’s under “settings->reading” when you set it up. check “discourage search engines”.

    Hi Steve

thankyou for your reply, I understand your comment re: hosts but can i just use any that have wordpress in the Cpanel tools or are some better than others for hosting and developing wordpress websites?
I would rather use a host that i know and use but if it is better to use a perticuler one then i would use them as i want the best service possible for the worpress software.

I will try the local install fist and see how it goes.

    regards Glooper

To the best of my knowledge, there isn’t a real benefit between different hosts cpanels with wordpress. Some have features you would like, others not so much. Everyone has an opinion on who their preferred host is, so its a matter of research you would need to do on your part. Shop around, and so on.

    Hey glooper,

MAMP is a very popular option for local installs. This tutorial should get you rolling.

My personal favorite for local development on a MAC is Valet for a lot of reasons. I would stick with MAMP if you are just getting your feet wet with WordPress and building a site locally in general. As you sharpen your skills, you may want to look at Valet and getting familiar with wp-cli.

    Welcome to WordPress!

    Cheers!

MAMP is an option, but a waste. Mac OSX comes with Apache web server built in. This tutorial will get you set up in a few minutes https://mallinson.ca/osx-web-development/
