One setup issue to go and I will be cooking with gas!

I have looked in the documentation and searched for articles related to this but I have yet to find anything applicable to what my target objective is.

Objective: I want to use the default capabilities in WordPress 4.8.3 to set up ‘self’ registration and login. The reason I’m specifying ‘default capabilities’ is that I am cash strapped and can’t afford to pay for a fancy plug-in. I figure that may come later but in the meantime I would like to get this setup now.

    Questions:
    1. Is meeting the objective noted above possible without using an add-on? If so, can you point me to an illustration of doing this?
    2. If it is easier to use a free add-on, I wouldn’t be objectionable to doing that but I don’t know what add-on would be best for my objectives. Suggestions?

The bottom line is that I want people to be able to comment regardless of being registered or not (by providing email etc.). I want to provide additional functionality for those would ‘do’ choose to register. Once I get the initial registration procedure working I will press forward on those additional functions.

  • I want people to be able to comment regardless of being registered or not (by providing email etc.)

Go to Settings >> Discussion and tick the following two boxes:

    • Allow people to post comments on new articles
    • Comment author must fill out name and email

Be sure to use a spam filtering plugin with this option! Akismet works well and is free; I find that WP-SpamShield works even better.

I want to provide additional functionality for those would ‘do’ choose to register.

Go to Settings >> General, and tick the “Anyone can register” can register box. In the “New User Default Role” select the default role for self-registered users.

A complete list of roles and capabilities can be found here. If one of those roles doesn’t work for you, you can use a plugin like User Role Editor to create your own.

All the plugins I mentioned are either free and or have free versions that will do what you want.

I had already done all of the procedures you mentioned above with the exception of the ‘Spam Filtering’ plugin. However, that hasn’t displayed any registration pop up or screen for the use to actually register themselves.

I’ve now installed WP-SpamShield so all of what you mentioned above is accomplished. How do I get the registration / login piece to show up?

    thanks again!

You would need to provide a link to the registration page—this isn’t the sort of thing WordPress does natively.

There are free plugins that you can use to generate a pop-up window, however.

Oh okay that’s fine is there a listing of special pages like that, which I can link to?

    Thanks,
