Setting Up .htaccess when WP is in subdirectory

    Look I am throughly confused at this point.

    I am fairly sure I was getting 500 errors and crashing my site because the .htaccess was set up wrong and because preload was causing some weird issues.

    The problem I am having is with this site: ConwayTile.com

    WordPress is installed under ConwayTile.com/blog/ but is properly directed to be served from the root at ConwayTile.com

    Now I know there are a lot of posts about issues getting this message:
    “It appears you have WordPress installed in a sub directory as described here. Unfortunately WordPress writes to the .htaccess in the install directory, not where your site is served from. When you update the rewrite rules in this plugin you will have to copy the file to where your site is hosted. This will be fixed in the future.”

    However I am confused because the message isn’t specific enough as to what to do, and especially not what to do if you do have WP installed to a sub-directory but also have it pointed to the root for the site URL permalinks.

    I just need some clarification is all. Below is what Super Cache automatically generated and put into the .htaccess that is in my ROOT folder (not in the /blog subdirectory .htaccess where WP is installed.)

    The confusion is that the message that comes up saying that it writes to the .htaccess in the install directory, but that is obviously a lie because it wrote to the .htaccess in my root, which isn’t the install directory.

    Now I am confused because the RewriteBase listed (as you will see below) as just /

    Yet the other lines throughout the mod rewrite do include a /blog before the /wp-content/

    What’s extra confusing is whether or not I should just leave what it generated to the root folder’s .htaccess (and please remember I have installed WP in a sub, but it is permalinked to the root and served from the front end).

    OR do I copy like it says to and add that all to the .htaccess in the /blog sub where WP is installed, and if I do – do I need to change any of the code (change rewrite base to /blog? remove the /blog/’s before the /wp-content/’s? Both? Other things? What?)

    And then finally, what happens if I leave the block of code on the root .htaccess after copying? Should it be in both places like that? And if so, should it be identical or should the rewrite base and /blog/’s be specific to where both files are located and if so, how to do that all properly.

    As a final thought, NO I am not going to move my WP install to the root. So let’s just go about how to solve my issue given the parameters I have specified.

    For anyone wondering what I ended up doing:

    If you have a WordPress Site like https://www.Example.com/blog/ with WP installed into the /blog subdirectory, but you are pointing everything to https://www.Example.com properly using permalinks and the codex guide, then you are going to want to know the right way to set up .htaccess for a plugin like WP Super Cache.

    The trick? Do nothing.

    WPSC gives a notification that confuses the hell out of you, but let me assure you, nothing needs to be done IF you have the same setup as described above.

    The plugin will write to the ROOT .htaccess and will include all the proper pathing rules.

    DO listen to the notification if you have WP installed in a subdirectory but AREN’T permalinking it to your root domain. Otherwise, disregard.

    Also, do NOT copy the rules into your other .htaccess (the one in your WP install directory), or even post any rules there for that matter.

    I have a BLANK .htaccess in /blog and my site operates just fine.

    *Remember this is for sites that have WP installed into a subdirectory but permalinked to the root.

    As far as any other problems, I could write a book on how to solve a ton of them, but this is the answer to this question and that’s what I’m leaving it at.
